Which College Should One Go To?
How does someone know the right college for them? To find this out, one must understand that all colleges are similar, but there are the few differences that make college an exciting experience. Two common colleges located in North Carolina are Catawba College and Appalachian State University. Although Catawba College and Appalachian State are similar with the fact that people go there to earn their degrees, they differ in ways such as their location, the type of school it is, and their campus’s atmosphere.
Catawba College is located in Salisbury, North Carolina which is about forty minutes away from Concord, North Carolina. The weather forecast is similar to that of Concord, North Carolina, so students would be used to the weather if they originally lived in Concord. Catawba College is a private school which is owned by a private party. “Private schools have to provide their own funding which comes from various sources such as tuition fundraising from parents, and donations from community members” (Private v. Public). This is why the cost of tuition is incredibly expensive. Catawba’s tuition alone is $26,140; if other fees were added to it, the total would become $36,230 a year. If a private school is associated with a religious group, they may also receive funding from that religious group. Catawba College has a Catholic Church located in its campus in which students go to on Sundays. Being a private school usually means that the size of the school is small and in the case of Catawba College, this is true. The campus size adds up to be just 276 acres. The fact that Catawba is a small school makes the atmosphere of the classroom friendlier. The students get to know each other better because the amount of the students is fairly small. Teachers and students have a better relationship with each other because of lack of population in a classroom. Catawba College has a total of 1,330 students. The small amount of people would allow students to get more one-on-one time and help from the teachers. It provides a family atmosphere and foundation in building a long term relationship with a person. The size of the school affects how many residence halls, classrooms, and students that are accepted. Catawba College has ten different quads in which the residence halls differs in the style. Some consists of suites within a house, while others are more like an apartment. Catawba College is close to Concord so, if a student would like to constantly visit their parents, then the college to go to is Catawba. Catawba College is recommended for students who cannot stand very cold temperatures, enjoy being in an environment with a little amount of people, and continually visits their home in Concord.
Appalachian State University is two hours away from Concord because of its location in Boone, North Carolina. It is found in the mountains where the temperature is very cold during the winter. Even when it snows, students are expected to make it to class depending on whether there is ice or not. If a person cannot stand the cold, they would be miserable at Appalachian State. It would be hard to adapt to the cold weather, especially for someone coming from Concord, North Carolina. Appalachian State University is a public school which means that it is funded and owned by the government. The government tries to help students become anything they want to become by giving anyone an opportunity to achieve their goals or dreams in life. They do this by giving scholarships, financial aid, and grants. Students who have done well over their years in high school are sometimes given full scholarships to attend a college such as Appalachian State. The tuition and fees cost of Appalachian State is $3,279 in-state and $9,185 if a student is from out of state. The cost of going to Appalachian is not very expensive because the government and citizens’ tax pays for a majority of it. “Financed through federal, state, and local taxes, public schools are part of a larger school system” (Public v. Private). This means that the size a public school is huge because of the amount of funding coming in. Appalachian State’s campus has 1,300 acres which means that is holds can hold a lot of students. The size of the campus has a lot to do with the 17,000 students enrolled at Appalachian State. The huge amount of students creates diversity and different backgrounds. Because it is a public school, there is no church associated with Appalachian, so students would have to find a church located somewhere around Appalachian’s campus. Appalachian has a friendly atmosphere and the beautiful sight of the mountain region is breathtaking which gives the campus an overall sense of peace. There are about twenty-one quads in Appalachian; and the neighborhood in which a student lives in, is sometimes based on the student’s grades, athletic ability, and field they are studying. Appalachian should be considered by students who do not mind cold weather, like having a big school in which they can blend into, and those who are financially disabled.
All in all, Catawba College and Appalachian State University is a place where a lot of students go for different reasons. They both offer majors in which the students can get an associate, bachelor’s, and a master degree in a field of their choice. When looking at these colleges, the things to consider is the location, type of school, and the campus’s atmosphere. Each campus is different because the architecture and style put into the schools shows its individuality. By looking close at each college and figuring out which one stands out better for an individual is only half the battle. The other half is having determination and never giving up. If all a person is looking at is getting an education, then it doesn't matter which one they go to. The college that a person chooses to go to should match their personality and interest.
